Gut Health & Functional Medicine
Healing the gut is a common trend that we see in functional medicine. It is also one of the most extensive and consistent protocols that we use! Gut dysfunction has been linked to so many conditions including skin issues, weight loss, autoimmune disease, mental health, inflammation and so much more! Your gut microbiome has “good” and “bad” bacteria, and imbalances in these bacteria can cause exhaustive symptoms. These symptoms can cause diseases like IBS, SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, leaky gut etc. Without having a consistent bowel movement every day, so much blockage and build up can occur, thus leading to these symptoms and diseases.
Our gut microbiome has over 1 trillion bacteria (that we know about), and our current, fast-changing environment and lifestyles are not equipped to deal with and feed the bacteria appropriately. The “bad” bacteria will increase when our bodies are exposed to toxins, especially when eating processed foods and sugars/carbs/grains. The “good” bacteria will increase when are bodies are exposed to the appropriate fiber, vitamins, minerals, and whole-based/organic foods. Not only are our bodies exposed to these toxic foods, but we are also exposed to medications, such as acid-blockers, anti-biotics, steroids, anti-inflammatories, and hormones. If you think about it, our human ancestors went centuries without using any of these medications or eating any of these foods. It is no wonder most of us have some type of gut issues!
